about

This album was randomly chosen to be Album #1 in the Deep Dude Project. These songs are not country, not jazz, not folk, and not rock. How to classify their genre or style is rather difficult. Even though the songs in the album are not Japanese bamboo flute music, and they are definitely not Zen poems, the nearest I could come to a classification for this album was to think that since some of the songs try to look inside a person, or beyond the person, or try to address non-everyday topics, they were almost, but not quite Zen-like, whatever the heck that means. Of course, in reality I don’t know the first thing about Zen and besides, I suppose that all songs from all artists are equally Zen-like, somehow.

But anyway, as a result of such thinking I put together this album, a mix of newer and older songs. Zen ended up in the album title because I hope that the listener will seek, or even almost find, some sort of Zen-ness in there somewhere, if they can stretch the meaning of Zen-ness so far that it becomes non-Zen, which is in itself kind of Zen-like.

about

Gary Deatherage Creston, British Columbia

While my more polished songs usually gravitate to II Cosmic or Howling Wannabes albums, the Deep Dude albums often provide homes for simpler songs, songs that are topical, or ones that are somehow different than usual for me..
