Fake News and Hocus Pocus Gary Deatherage November 1, 2018 1. There’s so much energy coming down From the Sun and the moon and the cosmos spinning ‘round We take it and make our own As best we can. 2. Some use it only for their own good Would lie and cheat anytime they could, and Sacrifice the Earth to support a man. Chorus- We can fake it or we can make it all go another way, We can try to remember our origins in this warm, moist clay The days flash past and the years slip by and So few can find their focus Their minds consumed by petty wants Fake news and hocus pocus. Break- 3. If we rip our own house apart Leave only Google, Exxon, and Walmart Where will our children live and What will they breathe? Chorus- We can fake it or we can make it go another way We can try to remember our origins in this warm, moist clay The days flash past and the years slip by and So few can find their focus Their minds consumed by petty wants Fake news and hocus pocus. End- Repeat 1st 2 lines slowly

Interesting Times Gary Deatherage February 21, 2020 1. It can be a curse to live in interesting times Where life’s seldom carefree, One can never relax and contemplate the facts Because let’s face it, there aren’t very many. Chorus - They’re bending and they’re spinning their versions of the truth, They cannot meet you halfway. They fully intend to control the world and How they dream of that day When everybody will look just like them, And everybody will think just like them And they’ll be in their heaven. Instrument break 2. Can you feel their energy dragging us down To much less than we could be? We cannot relax and contemplate the facts Because let’s face it, there aren’t very many. Chorus - They’re bending and they’re spinning their versions of the truth They cannot meet you halfway They fully intend to control the world and How they dream of that day, How they dream of that day, How they dream of that day, How they dream of that day.

It's Time 04:44
It’s Time Gary Deatherage 1. They want to make the world all about power They know best, will decide for you, See the world from the top of Trump Tower And from there, they like the view And from there they like the view. Chorus While a few billion people Can’t see their children through the haze So many go hungry And life is just some hard days. Break 2. The alarm clock is really ringing It’s time for us to all awake, Look at what our future’s bringing We could all refuse to drink from their cup, We could all refuse to drink from their cup. Chorus While a few billion people Can’t see their children through the haze And so many go hungry And life is just some hard days. Break 2 3. Perhaps we need some intervention Before we turn out all the lights. Intelligence, with good intention, It could decrease hate, and stop the fights, It could decrease the hate, and stop the fight. Chorus While a few billion people Can’t see their children through the haze And so many go hungry And life is just some hard days. (Repeat chorus to end)

COVID-19 02:28
COVID-19 Gary Deatherage March 9, 2020 1. I heard that Bill and his girlfriend Iris Were running from the corona virus But they called it COVID-19 And all they knew was, they had to keep their hands clean Chorus So they washed their hands in the morning And they washed their hands at night, Just before making love, and just before a fight. The doctors on TV all said that’s where the bugs all grew, And when you touch your face It lets them now own you. Break 2. They say Trump can’t see the direst Consequences of the virus They call COVID-19 'Cause all he knows is he has to keep his hands clean Chorus So he washes his hands in the morning And he washes his hands at night, Always before making love, and just before a fight The doctors on TV all said that’s where the bugs all grew And when you touch your face It lets them now own you.

Misrepresentation Gary Deatherage October 3, 2015 1. We live in a time of misrepresentation When the lie becomes the fact Leaves us confused across the nation And sets the tone for how we should act. Chorus So, how can we exercise our right Without any clear choice in sight? Break 2. Well, politicians’ ideas are so funny So very few make any sense They’re all designed to bring them money And to make us all feel fear and be tense. Chorus So, how can we exercise our right Without any real choice in sight? So how can we exercise our right Without any clear choice in sight?

This History Line Gary Deatherage November 21, 2018 1. I spend my time, traveling down this history line, But all I see I cannot know. It seems some feel they must serve themselves even steal The trust of the people and make them feel their loss. Chorus See how their faking is taking our bright sunlight. They want to keep us down here Thinking everything is alright, But it’s not. Break 2. We feel the pain they send us again and again, But little realize we could be free. The shadow reality they impose upon our minds Lets their selfish plans for us unwind. Chorus See how their faking is taking our bright sunlight They want to keep us down here Thinking everything is alright, But it’s not, But it’s not, But it’s not, But it’s not.

Only Serfs Need Apply Gary Deatherage January 14, 2018 1. Time is bringing us dark days Born in the minds of men Whose words and wicked ways Chorus 1 Take us backward once again To a time when less than sacred powers reigned Chorus 2- We’ll get emperors, kings, and lords, We’ll make tanks and planes and Fords, and Only serfs need apply to the henchmen. Break- 2. Feel how they shift reality Repeat untruth ‘til it’s true Make everything just about me and Ch 1 And take us back once again To a time when less than sacred powers reined Chorus 2- We’ll get emperors, kings, and lords, We’ll make tanks and planes and Fords, and Only serfs need apply to the henchmen. End- We’ll get emperors, kings, and lords, We’ll make tanks and planes and Fords, and Only serfs need apply to the henchmen. We’ll get emperors, kings, and lords, We’ll make tanks and planes and Fords, and Only serfs need apply to the henchmen.

Brand New Aristocracy Gary Deatherage November 11, 2016 1. How did we get ourselves into this situation? When they jumped over that cliff they took the whole damn nation Woke up this morning felt like I took the wrong fast train We have left the station and we can’t go back again. Chorus We can never return to democracy Now we have a brand new aristocracy. Break 2. Suddenly we have ourselves a Baron and a King, Who now gets to run things though he does not know a thing. Now he sure loves white folks. and he wants to make some money, Wants to rule, increase his fame, and grope another honey. Chorus We can never return to democracy Now we have a brand new aristocracy. We can never return to democracy Now we have a brand new aristocracy.

Narcissism 04:04
Narcissism Gary Deatherage June 28, 2017 1. There’s no way I can do All the things they want me to And just give in to the lies and what the dollar buys. 2. The only word they hear is “me”. Their only actions to get more, And convince themselves they’re far from danger’s shore . 3. They’ve got narcissism, egotism, Greed, and shrinking brains They’re grabbing everything that still remains. Break 4. In spite of all the woes of the world And the things that have gone wrong It’s OK to still feel good and write another song. 5. For the body and the mind, For the feelings and the soul, It always feels good to make yourself more whole. 6. So let yourself just dance In the pale moon light And let yourself be free, let the world grow bright. 7. Don’t let all the lies of the world Be the things that you believe. Look for simple Lights of truth Among the paths we weave. 8. For the body and the mind, For the feelings and the soul, It always feels good to make yourself more whole. 9. So let yourself just dance In the pale moon light And let yourself be free, let the world grow bright.

Can’t Find Their Way Gary Deatherage March 2, 2018 1. Well, it took a whole month of Sundays Plus a year within the haze For the wisdom of the people To be lost in false new ways. Chorus So now they can’t find their way to good ground And thus they cannot say where they’re bound. Break 2. So when the eyes of the people Were finally opened wide, They saw how all their freedoms And their beliefs were denied Chorus So now they can’t find their way to good ground And thus they cannot say where they’re bound (repeat)

Hoping To Gain Gary Deatherage December 20, 2017 1. I’ve been going around in a circle Hoping to gain some higher ground Each time I look back I see a complete lack In new wisdom that we’ve found. Chorus And when I look into their eyes I see dishonesty and lies. Break 2. I see cracks in the social foundation Which could cause it to all fall down Hurt all the families and rock the nation Lift up the rich and let the poor just drown. End When I look into their eyes I see dishonesty and lies. When I look into their eyes I see dishonesty and lies.

Fighting This War Gary Deatherage April 19, 2020 1. Maybe the things that went wrong Can all begin healing after so long. We’ve all been hiding, hiding at home, Fighting our human instincts to roam. Chorus We’re fighting a war without weapons, We’re fighting a war on our own, Fighting this war makes us shut-ins, We’re fighting this war on the phone. We’re fighting this war by never going out, We’re fighting this war from the sofa. We’re fighting this war that we don’t know much about, And in fact, all we know, it’s a nova, In fact, all we know, it’s a nova. Break 2. Maybe some time will bring us around To a better grip on the future Or maybe this virus will bring it all down Or help us respect Mother Nature. Chorus We’re fighting a war without weapons, We’re fighting a war on our own, Fighting this war makes us shut-ins. We’re fighting this war on the phone. We’re fighting this war by never going out, We’re fighting this war from the sofa. We’re fighting this war that we don’t know much about, And in fact, all we know, it’s a nova, repeat X4

Well, It’s True Gary Deatherage August 19, 2015 1. I took the train from Dallas on down to New Mexico And I chose a long, long way to go. Running from the feelings of a love affair gone wrong Hoping that this pain will not last long. Chorus Oh, it’s true, what they always say That the memories of love refuse to go away. Break 2. I looked out the window as the dry, brown earth passed by While I analyzed her bitter lie. And I saw that I would heal, do more than just survive, Be OK when my heart revived. Chorus Well, it’s true, what they always say That the memories of love refuse to go away. Well, it’s true, what they always say That the memories of love refuse to go away.

A Spark 03:21
A Spark Gary Deatherage August 23, 2012 1. Do you have a friend to comfort you, In times of need, to see you through? Who’s got your back, and knows your Heart, Someone you know you can trust when you’re apart. Chorus 1 Some say the human soul is but a spark, Just a brief trace of Light through the dark, Living through it’s time out here alone, With the Dream of finding its way home. Chorus 2 With another soul who seeks the Light Moving in the throes of rich delight Sometimes they spark children of their own To form a family of blood and bone. End Some say the human soul is but a spark Just a brief trace of Light through the dark, Living through it’s time out here alone With the Dream of finding it’s way home.

A Million Power Trippers Gary Deatherage December 31, 2019 1. It’s been a long year down here in the trenches Where we can’t see a goddamned thing, Where they’re really busy with their lasers and their wrenches There’s not much left for us to do but sing. Chorus While a million power trippers all demand their view One hand in your pocket and you still pay, too. And when you’ve give nup your very last cent They won’ t even care, even ask where you went. There’s plenty more where you came from And they don’t want the smart, They just want the dumb. Break 2. Far into the future when we look back Will we clearly se e through? Will we finally see how we went off track, And what we needed, what we needed to do? Chorus While a million power trippers all demand their view One hand in your pocket and you still pay, too. And when you’ve give up your very last cent They won’t eve care, even ask where you went. There’s plenty more where you came from And they don’t want the smart, They just want the dumb. There’s plenty more where you came from And they don’t want the smart, They just want the dumb. Break to end

about

Album liner notes by Mark Wolfe, co-producer  (August, 2020)

The songs on this album remind us of the important role music has always played in helping people make sense of the world.  In particularly trying times that role has often expanded by galvanizing a people’s fortitude, by providing comfort and moral compass, and by giving them a clear and unified voice in the face of tyranny and oppression.  Our times may not quite rival the magnitude of a World War, or even the intensity of a singularly disruptive year like 1968. But after four exhausting years of an assault on reason and democracy – with an economy destroying global pandemic thrown in for good measure – the times sure are interesting.   Never mind that overpopulation and a highly-fractured media ecosystem in support of it means music is forever metabolized into the hyper-local (it’s not the case that a Woodstock could never happen again, but rather who all would get it or even care?).  Indeed, that music today is hyper local only helps ensure the turbulence of the world can be duly regarded AND held somewhat safely at the gates.  In the hands of the supple-minded and ruggedly talented Gary Deatherage, we see world-churn up close, but not so safely that we’re entirely shielded from moral discomfort, some serious consternation and perhaps even conviction.  Conviction that, yes, things can be off-the-scale worrisome but also — and quite essentially via the music itself — ultimately hopeful.  Deatherage’s goal is simply that one or more of his songs might trigger the listener to briefly view the world through his eyes, to feel and understand our shared realities a bit better, and consequently to wish for and join in moving toward a healthier, kinder, more peaceful, and more intelligent global existence. As the German poet Hölderlin put it quite succinctly: “wherein danger goes, grows the saving power also,” reminding us that it is precisely in interesting times that music of awareness is not just listened to, but ultimately and essentially lived.
